Anglican Spirituality and Mysticism
This summer, Father Jonathan will lead an eight-week class exploring the spiritual and mystical theology of the English Church. Together, we will study the origins of monasticism in Desert Fathers, and how their wisdom makes its way to England. Then, we will survey the various ascetical forms that took root in the English Church such as Anglo-Saxon Spirituality, English Christian myths, and monasticism. We will, also, deal with key figures such as Julian of Norwich, Richard Rolle, Lancelot Andrewes, and Evelyn Underhill, and survey key texts such as The Cloud of Unknowing. Furthermore, our study will be practical and teach ways to apply our inherited ascetic practices in modern day life.
